Did you know that disc golf didn’t always use the baskets we are familiar with today? In the earliest days of “frisbee golf”, people used objects like trees, poles, and trash cans as their targets. The first baskets were made from sheets of metal shaped like a cone. Tone poles that make noise when they get hit were also a popular alternative to baskets.
While championship level baskets are the ultimate goal when installing a new course, they are also one of the biggest expenses. And importing baskets often incurs additional expenses due to customs.
Building your own baskets or using alternative targets can help reduce the cost of installing a course. Baskets can be made of wood, old tyres, or trash bins. A scrap of metal pipe can be hung on a rope to make a tone pole. Don’t be afraid to experiment with basket designs and materials.
